Yesterday it was announced that Kate Middleton had finally snagged her Prince, after eight years (with a brief interruption three years ago) of “practising” for married life – as the Prince of Wales so beautifully put to the media.
Wills finally popped the question last month whilst holidaying with Kate in Kenya, saying “As every guy out there will know, it takes time, a certain amount of motivation to get yourself going. It just felt really right out in Africa and was beautiful at the time.”
This protracted engagement marks a real shift for the Royal Family, who have taken a step back to give Kate and Wills the time and space to form a (hopefully) lasting relationship.
After all, no one wants a repeat of the troubles that marred Wills’ parents’ marriage, and it is hoped that by giving Kate several years to essentially trial the role of Princess, their marriage will have real longevity.
It will also be interesting to see how the media responds to this new ‘golden couple’ and whether their image will be splattered across the tabloids in true Posh & Becks fashion.
The new generation of Royals are certainly handling themselves in a different way. It’s not uncommon, for example, to see them photographed in nightclubs letting their hair down and engaging in activities that, well, everyone engages in.
The Palace says that no date has been set for the wedding yet, but it’s expected to take place in spring or summer 2011. Good luck to them!
